Maplewood Elementary
Energy Saving Puppetry
Vickey Rose, 4th Grade Teacher, got her students involved in helping the school maintain awareness of energy consumption having the E.S.P. Club (Energy Saving Puppetry).  She applied for a grant from the Public Education Foundation of Marion County, Project Green Machine category, to obtain the equipment needed to put on the program at her school.  Students learn about environmental resource conservation and present their knowledge through puppet dialog.

The program integrates science, reading, and writing using service-learning techniques.  Students from Mrs. Rose's 4th grade class are invited to audition for the club, which meets after school once a week for an hour.  During the meetings students study some aspect of environmental resource conservation and draft a script for their puppets that tell a little of what they have learned.

Above, students plan out their next puppet play, trying out lines on each other to convey the right information about what they have learned.

At right, a student identifies his puppet's name during a taping of a recent production about environmental stewardship.

The Public Service Announcement will be scheduled to air over the school's closed-circuit TV system during morning announcements.
