Project Green Machine - Qualifying Activities
Mrs. Debra Green, 7th Grade Math Teacher, put together a small group
of students who needed additional help with their math skills. They
met once per week for about 70 minutes. The focus of the group was
energy conservation. Their activities included reading the school's
three electric meters and recording data. "The activities gave the
group real world experiences in solving problems involving decimals, fractions,
and percent." Needed skills for the FCAT Test.
Incentives Program Results
Award money went toward establishing an after-school tutoring program.
They needed money for teacher salaries and buses. Now that they have
buses to take students home at the later time, they have also established
several academic enrichment clubs. One of these clubs is the district's
first "Project Green Machine Club." |
Belleview Middle School |
Project Green Machine - Qualifying Activities
Mr. Delbert Smallridge, Assistant Principal, has conducted an award-winning
SAVE
Team effort to prevent energy waste at his school. Belleview
Middle School was recently awarded 2nd Place nation-wide in the Alliance
to Save Energy (ASE) Earth Apple competition. Activities included
recycling of office paper, energy auditing, an energy conservation recognition
program, science curriculum which included a home energy "scavenger hunt,"
native plants demonstration gardern, and displays by students on energy
conservation.
Incentives Program Results
Award money went to the Science Department. They will use it
for a special planning day to develop a model Science CIM (Continuous Improvement
Model) initiative for the 2003-2004 school year. The money will pay
for needed supplies and substitute teacher pay during their planning session.

Elementary
Project Green Machine - Qualifying Activities
Mrs. Crum, Art Teacher, developed a grant for a special art project,
"The Switch That Saves," that consisted
of posters specially designed to go around or next to light switches,
encouraging people to turn off lights.

Belleview Santos Elementary |
Project Green Machine - Qualifying Activities
Mrs. Yvonne Gillum, developed a program through a PGM Grant.
The Belleview Santos Elementary SAVE Team involved 2 - 3 students from
each of their fifth grade classes that met approximately once per week
to conduct various conservation projects as the school's Energy
Patrol. These were enrichment projects undertaken by students
who were selected by their teachers to participate.

Emerald Shores Elementary |
Project Green Machine - Qualifying Activities
Mrs. Patty Jones, 5th Grade Teacher, started a SAVE Team that included
an Energy Patrol, light switch posters,
phone book recycling, use of recycled paper, graphing and charting electric
use, and other conservation activities.

Award money went toward the purchase of two new I-Mac computers for
classroom use, student and teacher supplies, and ink cartridges. |

Project Green Machine - Qualifying Activities
Mrs. Sara Ward, 3rd Grade Teacher, established an Energy
Patrol which goes around to designated classrooms, offices, cafeteria,
and the media center several times a week to check whether energy or water
is being wasted or saved. They have involved custodians and the Extended
Day Program supervisor to help get lights turned off after school.
They also have had an extensive recycling program for aluminum cans.
Incentives Program Results
Award money went toward the purchase of pole-mounted trashcans and
two picnic tables. The outdoor picnic tables will also allow for
outdoor classroom science experiments and Extended Day Program activities. |
Shady Hill Elementary |
Project Green Machine - Qualifying Activities
Rhonda Legall, Kindergarten Teacher, initiated the school's conservation
activities. Working with teachers in the other grades, the school
monitored energy use, used the morning announcements to promote conservation,
and did recycling projects. Mrs. Legall recently won a grant to expand
the program from the Public Education Foundation's Grants for Great Ideas.

courtyard areas. |
Wyomina Park Elementary |
Project Green Machine - Qualifying Activities
Mrs. Fuller, Pre-K Teacher, had her students involved in making small
posters for thermostats that remind staff and faculty of proper temperature
settings.
Incentives Program Results
Award money went toward staff incentives, classroom supplies and motivational
pins for those doing a good job. |
