The intent of Project Green Machine is to make it easier for principals to support the district's environmental compliance programs. It does this in two ways.  First, by combining three separate environmental compliance areas - energy, water, and recycling - into one program. Second, it offers a monetary incentive program for the principal to use as a management tool in persuading teachers and staff to support the effort.

Requirements for PGM Designation

1. Designate an Energy Coordinator (a single point of contact) for energy management at the school.  This could be the principal, an assistant principal, dean, or department head.  This person would pass information about the program on to the teachers and staff of their school.  They would also be the school contact for other district staff members outside the school who inquire about their program.

2. Establish an Energy Smart Team (or energy committee) comprised of maintenance and custodial personnel, as well as other key staff members and teachers.

3. Conduct at least one SAVE Team (or student curriculum-related project) mission during the school year.  Ideas for activities can be found in that section.

4. A Project Green Machine Advisory Board is optional and can be helpful at high schools where several departments would like to share information and coordinate cross-functional curriculum activities.  The advisory board may include the curriculum coordinator, the student activities director, academic department representatives, and vocational & technical department representatives.

5. A "Green Schools" Student Board is also optional and might help facilitate student SAVE Team activities when there are several Save Teams established at one school.  This team would consist of students, teachers, the head custodian, the minor maintenance technician, and others.  They would help coordinate information and activities of the individual SAVE Teams in their school.
